Our Early Puppy Development Program

Building Confident, Well-Adjusted Companions from Day One

In our early puppy development program, we believe that a puppy's first eight weeks lay the foundation for a lifetime. Every puppy, including our golden retrievers, is intentionally raised inside our home, where they receive daily love, structure, and purposeful experiences. These elements are essential to their growth as confident, adaptable family companions. Our goal extends beyond simply raising beautiful puppies; it encompasses preparing each one through our comprehensive puppy training program for a successful transition into their forever home.

Weeks 1–2 | Healthy Beginnings

The journey of early puppy development begins at birth. During these crucial first days, every puppy receives individual attention and gentle daily handling while safely remaining with their mother and littermates. In our comprehensive puppy training program, we provide: Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS), Early Scent Introduction (ESI), daily health monitoring, early human interaction, regular nail trims, and daily weight tracking. These early exercises are specifically designed to support healthy neurological development and help puppies, including those destined for golden retriever training, become more resilient as they grow.

Weeks 3–4 | Discovering the World

As their eyes and ears open, puppies begin exploring the world around them, which is a crucial aspect of early puppy development. We gently introduce new experiences in our puppy training program while allowing each puppy to build confidence at their own pace. During this time, puppies begin experiencing: Daily socialization, new textures and surfaces, household sounds, gentle grooming, individual handling, age-appropriate toys and enrichment, and confidence-building activities that are essential for golden retriever training.

Weeks 5–6 | Learning Through Experience

As personalities begin to shine during early puppy development, we start introducing simple routines that prepare puppies for family life, especially in our golden retriever training. Puppies begin learning essential skills through our puppy training program, which includes:

- Crate introduction

- Potty training foundation

- Collar introduction

- Leash introduction

- Car rides

- Individual play sessions

- Recall foundation

- Continued confidence building

Every experience is designed to create positive associations and reduce stress as they transition into their new homes.

Weeks 7–8 | Preparing for Home

Before joining their forever families, puppies undergo essential early puppy development practices that ease their transition. Each puppy in our program benefits from: Continued crate training, potty routine reinforcement, socialization with both adults and children, exposure to everyday household sights and sounds, grooming practice, a thorough veterinary health examination, and a temperament evaluation. By eight weeks of age, our puppies have participated in comprehensive golden retriever training that includes hundreds of positive interactions, helping them emerge as calm, confident companions.

Extended Puppy Training Program Give Your Puppy an Even Stronger Start

For families looking to enhance early puppy development before bringing their new golden retriever home, Mountain Laurel Goldens offers an Extended Puppy Training Program. This optional puppy training program allows your puppy to stay with us beyond eight weeks of age, where they continue to receive individualized training, socialization, and daily care in a familiar environment. Whether you're planning a vacation, have a busy schedule, or simply want your puppy to build a stronger foundation before joining your family, this program facilitates a smoother transition for both you and your puppy.

Your Puppy Will Continue Learning

During their extended stay, we focus on early puppy development by building confidence and reinforcing good habits through positive, age-appropriate golden retriever training. Our comprehensive puppy training program includes: Crate training, consistent potty training routines, sleeping through the night in a crate, name recognition, recall ('Come'), sit, down, place, loose-leash walking, waiting politely at doors, confidence around new people and environments, continued socialization, car rides, grooming, bathing, ear cleaning, and nail trims, as well as exposure to household sights and sounds. Every puppy progresses at their own pace, and our goal is to foster confidence while making learning enjoyable and rewarding.
